McNair Scholars Program Eligibility and Application

Eligibility

A participant must meet the following requirements before becoming a McNair Scholar:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Completed at least 60 units (Transfers Exempt)
  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • Intention to pursue a Ph.D. after graduation
  • Low income as defined by the US Department of Education AND a first generation college student (where neither parent completed a 4-year degree)
    OR
    From an underrepresented group in graduate education (African American, Hispanic-Latino, Native American and Alaskan, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian)

Program Requirements and Expectations

All McNair participants are required to commit in writing to all program requirements and expectations. For a complete list, please contact us. Some requirements and expectations include:

  • Weekly and/or bi-weekly seminars
  • One year academic research internship
  • Academic participation at a national conference
  • Academic advising from staff, graduate mentors, and faculty
  • Rigorously prepare for and secure a test date for the GRE general exam
  • Attain a doctoral degree within ten (10) years of attaining a bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Barbara

Deadlines

All 208-2009 McNair Scholars Program deadlines have passed. Recruitment will resume in the 2009-2010 academic year.

  • Applicants: Incoming 2009-2010 Transfer Students

    • Deadline: October 19, 2009

  • Applicants: Currently enrolled Sophomores and Juniors with research experience

    • Deadline: February 1, 2010

Application
